Awareness That Grows: Soil and Society

Soil degradation is not only a biophysical process — it is also a social process. Land use decisions, consumption patterns, planning priorities, and production systems are shaped by cultural norms, economic incentives, education, and collective narratives.

Research in environmental psychology and sustainability transitions shows that knowledge alone does not automatically lead to behavioural change. What matters is how knowledge is framed, contextualised, and connected to everyday life. Awareness becomes transformative when people can recognise how their decisions relate to ecological systems. Soil is often invisible in this respect.

Storytelling and cultural narratives

Storytelling shapes perception. Media representations, artistic interpretations, community narratives, and public campaigns influence whether soil is seen as a living ecosystem, a disposable substrate, a climate solution, a cultural heritage, or even a risk factor. Narratives affect emotional engagement and moral positioning — they translate abstract data into relatable meaning.

When soil is framed as essential for food security or climate resilience, public support for protective measures tends to increase. When it remains framed as technical or peripheral, engagement often declines. Storytelling does not replace science — it translates it.

Connecting awareness to action

Behavioural change rarely occurs through information alone. It is supported when individuals:

  • recognise systemic connections
  • perceive relevance to their own lives
  • see feasible pathways for engagement
  • observe collective participation

Education, storytelling, and awareness contribute to these conditions. They make soil visible not as an abstract resource, but as a living foundation of everyday systems.
